MAGAs: Beware of what you wish for

Today’s victory, tomorrow’s victimhood

Jeffrey Denny

Congrats, die-hard Trump supporters!

Like the proverbial dog, you finally caught the car. Now you’re driving the car, we hope steering America to greatness as you wish.

You’re a distinct minority of Americans, maybe 20–30 percent. You deeply believe in democracy. But thanks to decades of GOP hook and crook — gerrymandering and vote suppression, Supreme Court packing, culture warring, fueling resentment and division, bald-faced lying, and suckering rubes—you’ve achieved the impossible: minority rule. Not what your beloved Constitution intended, but whatever.

In any case, you may hate government, but now you’re in charge of it.

You may hate the privileged educated coastal elites and their media, but you’re allowing the Republican ones use you for power and money.

You believe things the vast majority of Americans reject — like how the 2020 election was stolen from Trump, and how Roe v. Wade should be overturned.

You reject things the vast majority of Americans believe — like how the pandemic was real and deadly, and masking and vaxing saved lives, including many of yours.

Many of you hate your fellow Americans who aren’t straight White conservative Christians like you.

You present as the worst America can get. Like it or not, you’re branded by your hate-spewing compatriots at Trump rallies and the Capitol violent rioters, on social media posting racist and misogynist hate and death threats, on the dark web spreading obvious and disturbing lies, and in the nasty bully delight taken in triggering the libs. As if hate makes America greater.

And you don’t seem to care if Republicans don’t have a plan to make America or your lives better.

You’re terrified and traumatized that minorities are taking over America. One minority group already has. You. Non-White minorities may trouble you, but they don’t have your power.

Yes, MAGAs, ready or not, you rule.

I’m beseeching you, on behalf of America, please rule wisely.

Do it for your country. Do it for all of us, even your fellow Americans you hate.

Do it for you too.

I worry your agenda could not only hurt America and Americans you hate, it could backfire to hurt you and those you care about. Like:

Supporting government tyranny

You’ve been more paranoid than most that the government is invading and dictating your lives and taking away your Constitutional liberties.

Yet you gladly invite your phone and social media to follow you more than the liberal Deep State government could ever dream of.

In any case, you must know that overturning Roe v. Wade could put all your Constitutional privacy protections in play.

Not just highly private doctor-patient privilege stuff, contraception and marriage. Big Brother could be free to watch you for any verboten activities — he loves to watch — and send black helicopters with jackbooted government thugs in bucket helmets to take away your Shades of Grey jackboots and bucket helmets. Your politicians are famous for outlawing sex stuff they do, but of course they exempt themselves.

Hurting your family

You might be rigorously straight White Christian identifying gender strictly from your birth certificate, and fret about all this LGBTQ+, pedophile “grooming” and whatever your media exaggerates to trigger you for ratings and money. Pedophile grooming is not ok unless you’re a MAGA Congressman like Matt Gaetz.

You might even be fighting personal private stirrings that shalt not speak their name, like countless “family values” Republicans.

But chances are a relative won’t gender-identify or love like you think they should. If you judge and refuse to love them as they are, you’ll lose them. You’ll be the hateful relative nobody likes, poet Sir Walter Scott’s “The wretch, concentred all in self/Living, shall forfeit fair renown/And, doubly dying, shall go down/To the vile dust, from whence he sprung/Unwept, un-honored, and unsung.”

Making your kids stupid

Do you really believe censoring teachers and banning books is protecting your innocent children from becoming LGBTQ+ or hating themselves for being White?

If so, bless your heart. Censorship never works. Especially now.

Kids nowadays, to quote elders forever, can Google anything they want to know. Kids are smarter than we think and ornery like we were — they’ll search and find especially what they’re told not to.

If you stifle teachers and strip libraries, you’ll sentence your children to be stupid, narrow-minded, hateful and backwards. And needing years of therapy. Why drag down our next generation that America is depending on to be greater?

Rigging the vote against you

Sure, you tremble that the diverse, non-MAGA majority of Americans are endangering our democracy with their Socialism, so you need to grab power by any means necessary, even if undemocratic.

But the political worm always turns.

The majority of Americans you’ve beaten someday will turn your tactics against you, and relegate you to a pathetic footnote of American history. Like the mid-1800s “Know Nothings” learned, Lincoln's better angels of America’s nature always win against proud stupidity.

Getting people you love shot

Your Trump Supreme Court may lift all gun restrictions, which somehow you dearly want.

Unfortunately, more guns makes it more likely your children, family, friends or neighbors will shot, wounded, or killed.

Maybe you don’t care when shootings hurt fellow Americans you don’t care about, like non-White children who live in cities. But you probably care if they happen to you or your people.

Remember this from poet John Donne, even if he wasn’t as wise as Tucker Carlson:

“No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main … And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”
