Re: The 2024 presidential nomination

The elephant in the room isn’t the elephant.

It’s a deadly disease infecting the Republican pachyderm. Call it “Moronovirus,” or the “MAGA Grippe.”

Symptoms include fever, chills and vomiting over the mean-spirited, narrow-minded, anti-American MAGA demands.

Decent Republicans don’t really stand for proudly ignorant book banning, racial history censoring, LGBTQ bullying, bigoted immigrant hating, reproductive rights abridging, anti “woke” Gestapo-ing, and all the lamebrained culture warring against other Americans and even corporations. Worst of all, loving Trump more than America or even Jesus.

We’re just performing for MAGA votes, right?

We all know MAGAs are destroying our Grand Old Party.

MAGAs may be loud and proud, but they’re still a lunatic fringe.

They’re certainly not like America. America is far better than MAGAs.

Indeed, most Americans fear and loathe the MAGA agenda. They worry MAGAs are dragging America down.

Most decent Republicans worry too. Just like most independents and all Democrats.

Indeed, the MAGA agenda has reunited America in opposition. As the 2018, 2020 and 2022 election results proved in the ignominious defeat of Trump and Trumpism.

Same with Biden’s resolution of the GOP’s debt ceiling debacle, which was driven by appeasement of MAGA hate for poor nonwhite Americans whipped up by wealthy white Fox stars for audience and ratings, devil take the hindmost as they jet to their lavish coastal vacation homes.

We’re also aware that poor white MAGAs take government handouts but feel better by biting the hand that feeds them and hating nonwhites in the same boat. This is the lowest form of white privilege.

We get what’s happening.

As America evolves away from our aging, white, patriarchal Christian party, we had no choice but to devolve by empowering MAGAs.

We needed to use MAGAs for tax and regulation breaks by inciting their hate for coastal elites. Yet we don’t want to see MAGAs at our elite coastal golf resorts unless they’re working there. Which they’re probably not, because hardworking immigrants took jobs that MAGAs on the dole are too proud to do.

But our gerrymandering, voter repression, inciting of hate and division, and other political hook and crook to put MAGAs in power worked. Too well. We upgraded the screaming toddler in the back of the plane into the pilot’s seat.

Now the GOP is soiling itself like a pilot toddler on a long flight. And we’re suffering the festering poopy diaper that is Trump.

What should the GOP do?

In case you missed it, Republican Governor Chris Sununu had an answer.

He’s from the patriotic “Live Free or Die” initial presidential primary state of New Hampshire. He’s also son of the old Democrats’ reviled Reagan chief of staff John Sununu.

By declaring he’s not running against Trump in 2024, Chris Sununu had the liberty to suggest a cure for the MAGA malady.

In a Washington Post op-ed headlined, “I’m not running for president in 2024. Beating Trump is more important,” Sununu said:

“[We] must abandon the issues that are solely made for social media headlines, such as banning books or issuing curriculum fiats to local school districts hundreds of miles away from state capitals.

“In 2024, millennials and Gen Zers will be a significant voting bloc. Republicans must not cede this ground.

“Instead of pushing deeply unpopular and restrictive nationwide abortion bans, Republicans should recognize that every time they open their mouths to talk about banning abortion, an independent voter joins the Democrats.

“We need to expand beyond the culture wars that alienate independents, young voters and suburban moms.”

In other words:

Our GOP, which has long branded Democrats as weak, needs to grow the proverbial pair and declare three simple words to defeat Trump forever: “Screw The MAGAs.”

Sure, MAGAs, like Trump, are highly sensitive and will play victim when called out like bullies do.

But the best way to deal with bullies is to walk away.
