Why aren’t horrible voters held accountable?
The Trump Troll Treason Caucus didn’t elect itself
Troubled by “The exhausting, soul-sapping meanness of Lauren Boebert,” as a Washington Post columnist described the shameless Republican congresswoman from Colorado?
Don’t completely blame Boebert for her mean, nasty, ugly, smugly snarky, bigoted, bullying, lame-brained, gun-toting, violence-inciting brand.
Boebert wouldn’t be sneering “Jihad Squad” at a Muslim colleague — nor would she even be in Washington and the national news bringing shame to Congress and the complicit GOP — if not for the 215,000 Colorado voters who put her in office last fall.
Nor would fellow Rep. Paul Gosar have posted a video slaughtering AOC but for his 162,000 Arizona voters in 2012, 122,000 voters in 2014, 203,000 voters in 2016, 188,000 voters in 2018, and overwhelming 278,000 voters in 2020.
True, Boebert and Gosar are vile ones with termites in their smiles with all the tender sweetness of a seasick crocodile. But they’re also Grinching for their Grinchiest voters.
Politicians want to represent their constituents in the worst way.
This ilk does, literally. The more outrageously Boebert and Gosar earn the Congressional Medal of Dishonor, the more their voters must love it or at least tolerate it, which is the coward’s excuse.
Same goes for the despicable antics of their fellow Congressional embarrassments Matt Gaetz, Louie Gohmert, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Jim Jordan, Steve King, Devin Nunes, and the rest of the “GOP Troll Caucus,” as MSNBC’s Chris Hayes dubbed the shameless posse.
Tallying the 2020 election results, some 2 million Americans voted for Boebert, Gaetz, Gohmert, Gosar, Greene, Jordan, and King. Many won bigly: Gaetz, 61%; Gosar, 69%; Greene, 74%; Jordan, 66%; King, 62%; Gohmert, 76%.
Then there’s the 147 GOP Treason Caucus members that trashed the Constitution by trying to cancel the votes of 81 million Americans to steal the 2020 election for Donald Trump.
By quick tally — roughly averaging 200,000 voters per — nearly 30 million Americans backed the Treason Caucus members. Many of these voters have swallowed the Big Lie spread by the Treason Caucus that Trump was robbed of reelection. This in turn allows the Treason Caucus to claim that Trump voters feel robbed.
Finally, of course, 74 million Americans voted for the sociopathic liar, gas-lighter, divider, destroyer, swindler, chiseler, cheater, lawless, Covid super-spreader, twice impeached Capitol riot inciter.
His voters wanted more Trump either in spite of, or because of, his degradation of the White House and our Constitution, rule of law, society, and country.
Heading into the 2016 election, Trump bragged, “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn’t lose any voters, OK?” Turns out he lost thousands of voters who died believing and bleating his Covid denials, and infected others with their anti-mask, anti-vax fanaticism that spread the disease.
Yet wholly blaming Trump, his Troll Treason Caucus and the complicit GOP is like blaming Edgar Bergen’s ventriloquist dummy Charlie McCarthy for Bergen’s racism.
They’re merely puppets of MAGA Nation, which now controls the Republican Party, Congress, and the Supreme Court, thanks to decades of Republican hook and crook to win and take all, damn what’s right.
Problem is, like the proverbial dog that caught the car, MAGA Nation has no earthly clue or discernable workable plan how to make America greater. They’re simply rebels who want to tear things down — and proud of it — without a clue how to rebuild better. They hate their government with little knowledge, experience, or even care about how their government works or how to make it better.
Instead MAGAs throw tantrums like colicky toddlers. Goaded by their media, they eschew responsibility and blame others for their resentments, post shockingly vicious racist and misogynist hate, send death threats with the bold courage of anonymity, and bleat Trumpy propaganda while accusing the Democrat libs of being sheep.
MAGAs attack fellow Americans who are different or vote differently, treat politics like it’s a game, sneer at Trump nonbelievers, whatabout their wrongs, and play victim as bullies do when challenged to stand behind their fighting words.
Naturally, their selected politicians pander to and provoke the anti-lib outrage addiction. Based on their camera-grabbing, media-grubbing stunts, their primary policy agenda is to rile the rubes and trigger the libs for power and money. Like P.T. Barnum or multi-level marketing grifters gifted at suckering suckers.
Decent Americans all know the worst MAGA politicians don’t belong in office, representing America.
The Trump Troll Treason Caucus is only in power thanks to decades of GOP vote rigging by carving up states to create safe “gerrymander salamander” seats that twist and wind to cast away voters who aren’t White Republicans.
Rep. Gosar’s Arizona district that half-rings Phoenix was designed to defenestrate the Hispanic vote. Rep. Jordan represents Ohio’s “Duck District,” named so because it looks like one. The U.S. Justice Department is suing Texas Republicans for redrawing districts specifically to steal the vote from Hispanic and Black populations.
Certainly Democrats gerrymander when they can. But Republicans with their impressively reckless disregard for democracy have stitched together a Frankenstein monster that’s destroying the party’s self-celebrated traditional conservative, Christian, family values.
Decent Republicans like Bob Dole are now smeared as anti-American deep-state RINOs and trounced by whack-wing dregs who fuel and pander to hate, resentment, conspiracy and ignorance.
Even good Republicans prostrate to MAGAs. Some explain they’re doing so only to protect Congress from an extremist primary challenger. How noble in reason! how infinite in faculty! in form and moving, how express and admirable! in action how like an angel!
Voters who elect our trolling treasonous dregs and drag down our nation can’t get off scot-free.
Not holding these voters accountable would be patronizing and condescending, saying bless their hearts, they don’t know any better, they’re doing the best they can, the poor dears.
They do know better. When asked, these voters haughtily insist they know exactly what they’re doing.
They hate politicians but love when their politicians troll and treason.
They preen that they love America more than any American while electing goons that trash American values.
They claim to love democracy while supporting the Trump coup attempt and thrilling in minority rule, as their votes count more than their fellow Americans’ do. Which means, for example, while the overwhelming majority of Americans doesn’t want government intruding into their private lives, most of all dictating reproduction like in China, here we are with Roe about to go.
Same goes for guns, healthcare, childcare, voting rights, Covid vaccinations, and myriad other leading issues the MAGA minority now dictates — often hurting themselves first and worst, and the rest of us along the way.
You don’t have to be Spiderman’s uncle to know that with great power comes great responsibility. And accountability.
Yes, professional mainstream journalists know the credo to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable. And certainly many MAGAs are afflicted.
But given the dangers that Trump Troll Treason voters pose, let’s stop pulling punches and start calling out the power, the people who are afflicting our country.
